Rural Child Aid Foundation (RUCAF) is registered Community Service Organization (CSO) which works to provide voice & support for the voiceless in the rural societies, particularly Children with Disabilities (CWD’s) and out of school young women & children. As part of our activities, we link people in deprived communities to the resources and opportunities to help them improve their social functioning through service providers.

HISTORY
RUCAF started in Pershie-Elmina by a group of women whom due to some reasons they were unfortunate to have education themselves. Also due to the extreme poverty they find themselves by which they have been neglected or excluded in social activity which is gradually affecting their families at large, there was the need to start an initiative that will address their situation and that of their generation since there is lack of support for development. Through this RUCAF was born.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
 To advocate and prevent discrimination against CWD in slums & rural communities
 To improve basic Education, health care & economic conditions for poor families.
 To create awareness about the rapid growth of rural out of school children
 To improve the chances of youth in the rural settings
 To support education for poor groups and families.
 To educate illiterate fishermen & fish mongers about the right of their children
 To empower women economically through skill training.
 To ensure environmental safety for all.

Goals
 Our long term goal is to create chances for women and children in excluded communities.

 Our short term goal is to end the process that promotes rural – urban migration and its related human trafficking and other associated activities.

PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES
RUCAF runs the following activities;

SHELTER
RUCAF run a daily shelter, that is drop in centre where everybody can visit and work regardless of your age, background, physical appearance to access support. Being it domestic violence, child abuse, youth in drugs and other related human needs such as medications, secondhand clothing, food etc

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
RUCAF work in connection with other service providers such as community health workers to bring basic health knowledge to parents and families prior to their healthy life style whiles promoting reproductive health education likewise working with student from school of social work and other tertiary institution that need to use our platform to study and support the beneficiary communities on their day to day life and the socio economic issues that affect them both in their various homes, farms and market place particularly those in the coast whiles creating awareness on the right of the people with disabilities, domestic violence against woman & children .
REHABILITATION CENTER (SKILL TRAINING)
RUCAF provide skill training for out of school children as a preparation stage to rehabilitate their mind and prepare them for meaningful activities. After six months of trying various trades, if the beneficiary is seen motivated to mention or choose a programme of his/her choice. Attention is given to young & single mothers (youth) and some widows are considered because of their kids.

OUTREACH EDUCATION ON PERSONAL HYGIENE

LITERACY CLASSES
About 65% of the targeted communities in the municipality have no education; therefore, there is the need to provide financial literacy to families and groups as a way of improving their home economics status whiles preparing the fish mongers themselves to improve their day to day sales.

RUCAF runs the following literacy programmes:
 Street corner education for out of school children
 Adult education for single mothers who cannot read and write.
 Financial literacy for illiterate single parents

VOLUNTEERS
RUCAF is open to all incendiaries no matter what and where you come from or the group, you are welcome. As a way of improving the social status and the psychological development to the beneficiary communities and the inhabitants, there is the need to open our doors for all kind of volunteers to share their thoughts and better way of improving the chances of neglected human beings in the society.

Sources of funding

RUCAF Self-help project,

RUCAF largely depends on charity donation and periodic collection of dues from members.
Further, parents and families are allowed to contribute for feeding of their children in divers’ ways such as, food stuff, money or any contribution of their choice.

Current state of RUCAF
Due to the mobile nature of our activities, RUCAF has positioned itself in Glefe one of the poorest slum communities in Accra within the Dansoman – Sub Metro where children are negleted the most as well as children with disabilities. Further, it’s a community by which one could described as hotspot for working children and temporal resident for rural urban migrants.
Also Jei Krodua has been a community of which 90% of student cannot continue. Further, jobless among youth enhances ilicit activities & force children to work or marry instead of schooling.
